This baseball offseason is like a frigid desert with a few tumbleweeds blowing through. The hot stove is running on fumes and any tiny blip rolling past social media is going to stand out. But when the San Diego Padres posted a picture of Eric Hosmer and then a tweet saying "stay tuned," while tagging Hosmer's handle, it was like a whole barn tumbled by.

The free agent first baseman is looking to get paid this winter and both the Padres and the Kansas City Royals are vying for his services. The Royals reportedly offered Hosmer a seven-year $147 million deal, while San Diego reportedly offered seven-years and somewhere around $140 million. So when San Diego posted these victorious messages, it certainly turned some heads:

But, like an athlete caught posting a dick pic, the Padres responded by saying that they were definitely—without a doubt—hacked.

Sure, maybe that happened. Maybe someone went to great lengths to figure out the passwords for multiple San Diego Padres social media accounts and posted fake messages about a free agency acquisition. Or, maybe San Diego's social media manager went rogue. Or maybe the Padres thought they were somehow on the verge of an unlikely win in the bidding war…until they weren't, and someone jumped the gun. It's any one of those equally likely scenarios, for sure.
