Wetherspoons Ran Out of Steak on Steak Night and People Got Mad

It’s been a hard day. You forgot to download a podcast for your commute so spent 25 minutes watching a stranger on the bus play Candy Crush. The new shade of eyeshadow you’re testing out really isn’t fitting with your aesthetic. To salvage this train wreck of a Tuesday, all you want to do is head down to your local Wetherspoons, grab a reasonably priced Brooklyn Lager and 14-ounce Aberdeen Angus, and luxuriate in the pub chain’s weekly Steak Club night.

Imagine then, the horror of finding that Spoons had run out of steak. On steak night! Indeed this was the case for diners all over the country yesterday, as Wetherspoons unexpectedly cancelled its weekly meat-centred dinner.

According to industry website The Morning Advertiser, Wetherspoons’ supplier recalled its rump, sirloin, and gammon steaks, leaving the chain unable to serve the meat dishes for the next few days. The Wetherspoons Steak Club, which takes place every Tuesday across the UK, usually serves 900,000 steaks each week.

A notice displayed in a Wetherspoons pub uploaded by a Twitter user yesterday informs customers that the “8oz & 14oz Aberdeen Angus rump steak, 8oz sirloin steak [and] 5oz & 10oz gammon [sic]” are all off the menu. Customers, however, could choose from a mixed grill with chicken or a barbecue chicken melt. But to clarify—no steak. For Steak Club.

Many customers took to Twitter to express their outrage at Wetherspoons’ utter failure to supply the British public with its weekly meat slab fix.

In response to steakgate, Wetherspoons’ supplier Russell Hume released a statement to The Morning Advertiser explaining the lack of meat: “The product recall was a precautionary measure because of mislabelling. We have no reason to believe that the product was unsafe to eat.”

Let’s hope Wetherspoons doesn’t make this misteak again.
