Watch the Best Campaign Video in Canadian Political History

Independent candidate Wyatt Scott wants to make college more affordable. Judging by his video, he also wants to kill literal dragons and ride around on giant geese.

Have you ever watched a political ad and thought to yourself, This is boring, or I've heard all these talking points before? What about, Not enough dragon-slaying for my taste?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, meet your favorite candidate in the current election: Wyatt Scott. Scott is running as an independent (obviously) in the newly minted BC riding of Mission Matsqui Fraser Canyon, and he wants you to vote for him. But unlike the usual fat cats and clowns, he's not into empty promises. He's about the real issues: keeping postsecondary education affordable, making the government work for Canada's indigenous peoples, and flying atop an improbably large Canada goose.

Scott knows that Canada is entering a transitional phase. This election could well result in the NDP forming a federal government for the first time in history, or in Canada's first prime ministerial political dynasty. On the other hand, we could also end up with another Conservative government, which would continue us on our current path of ignoring and contributing to climate change, remaking ourselves as a far more aggressive international player, and supporting Israel even more ardently than the US. We are either at the start of momentous change in this country, or in the middle of a quieter, but arguably more dramatic, shift to the right. And to prove to you that, Scott's done some nifty CGI that adds a chinstrap beard to his face. Politics for the people!

However, Scott's ad raises some troubling questions. Because he's running as an independent and specifically against the corruption of more traditional politicians, he needs to be accountable to the people. So, then, what's all this about Zorg Ruler of the Universe sponsoring the commercial? And worse still, why was his name crossed out? What exactly is Scott trying to hide from us?

Still, it may be worth electing him just to see what he can do. In an election so far remarkable because the ostensible left-wing party is waffling on what should be a top priority for every country on earth, Scott's brand of wacky outsider politics could be an important contribution to the electoral landscape. Only time (in office) will tell if Scott cares more about dapping up aliens than effecting positive change.
