British electronic duo, AlunaGeorge, will break 3D-rendered ground tomorrow night when they play the first ever concert in Minecraft, the popular building block-based game created in 2011 by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson.

The event is part of the opening show of Norwegian tech conference The Gathering, which will also include performances from Oslo-born, LA-based band Lemaitre and Norwegian EDM producers Broiler. While it's not unusual for the conference to begin with musical performances, the scenario they've got set up here is definitely the first of its kind.

While the artists do their thing in person at Harmar, Norway's Hamar Olympic Hall, a gang of volunteer gamers backstage will recreate their movements within the game using pre-made avatars, reports The Local. In other words, they'll use their keyboards to bring a simulated version of the concert to life in real time. That publication reported that this will allow "other gamers far from Norway the same experience as those in the hall."

Gathering organizer Erik Heisholt has also said that there will be in-game advertisements for the concert, like this one below.

In yet another URL mirroring of IRL circumstances, there will be limited capacity at the in-game Minecraft concert due to server space. "I'm sure they'll be able to accommodate around 2,000 to 3,000 people, so this will have the same sort of feel as seeing a show in small concert venue," he said.

When THUMP spoke to beloved Minecraft composer Daniel Rosenfeld last year, he talked about what it was like to have complete creative freedom with the project and the weirdness of responding to fan donations.

For those that don't remember, Notch bought Aphex Twin's unreleased Caustic Window test pressing for $46 million on eBay, so a love of electronic music is clearly a recurring theme in the Minecraft world.
