Jamie Vardy's Pre-Game Drinking Ritual Is Disgusting

The Leicester star drinks a glass of port, three Red Bulls, and a double espresso for good measure.

Jamie Vardy rocketed into stardom last season when Leicester City surprisingly won the English Premier League. He somehow came from just-about-nowhere to score the second most goals in the league behind some well-coiffed guy from Spurs. That got him a book deal. And in that book, he reveals that the driving force behind that memorable season was actually a disgusting concoction of drinks that would likely leave the average person throwing up.

So let's go through Vardy's bizarro Matt Forte diet.

The night before a game, Vardy would drink a cup of port while watching television. He would pour it into a water bottle and sip away. Port, for you uncultured, is a dessert wine and most probably not meant to be had like it's Gatorade. He did it before Leicester's first game, scored a goal the next day, and never stopped.

"I'm not normally superstitious but from the moment I scored against Sunderland on the opening day, I didn't want to change anything," Vardy said in his autobiography. "I fill a small plastic water or Lucozade bottle to halfway and just sip the port while watching television."

OK, fine. At least that's the night before—the port will wear off and get out of the system quickly enough. It's what Vardy drank on match day that makes you wonder how he functioned: three cans of Red Bull and a double espresso before the starting whistle.

That is just a remarkable amount of caffeine. I guess it goes down as easy for him as casual racism, but just the thought of trying to run after drinking three sugary, carbonated drinks makes me miserable. Vardy's kidneys must hate him.

Vardy has scored onlytwice so far this season so maybe the Leicester striker will kick that disgusting combination and prepare for a match like someone who has respect for his digestive system.
