Game-Winning Goal in OT Goes Through the Net in Crazy AHL Finish

This is a crazy finish featuring a goal that went unnoticed because it tore through the net.

Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman and 2009 Red Wings draft pick Nick Jensen pulled off something you'd expect to see in an NBA Jam version of a hockey game: with about two minutes left of overtime in a scoreless tie, he fired a slapshot so hard it not only blew past the goalie, it tore right through the netting in goal. As a result, the referees did not believe it was a goal at first, and play continued. Players, the bench, and crowd seemed to think otherwise, but it's an understandable thing to miss. It happened so fast and, uh, the puck wasn't in the net, so…obviously it's not a goal. You can't blame anyone for not asking yeah, but what if it ripped through the net??

Still, Jensen, who had a pretty good view, said he was sure it was a goal because he saw it hit the net and take a strange path out.

"My head was a little down, and then when I looked up you could see it (the puck) go toward the net a little bit and it slung out and didn't hit the boards and came out on an angle," Jensen recalled. "I saw the net move so I was about 80 to 90 percent sure it went in."

What makes this even weirder is that there was no stoppage in play between this moment and the end of the period. So the game looked to be going to a shootout, but once overtime ended, referees were given the chance to look at the play in super slow motion. After about three minutes of review, they realized everyone's eyes were not deceiving them and the Griffins were given a 1-0 win over the Lake Erie Monsters.
