The Trailer for 'The Canyons' Is Nothing Like the Film

Earlier this year, VICE Films and Grolsch Film Works teamed up with the directors Harmony Korine, Alexey Fedorchenko and Jan Kwiecinski to make a three-part film called The Fourth Dimension. Now, Grolsch Film Works have a new website where you can find out what they’ve been up to and read/watch interesting stuff about films. Every week we'll be plucking the highlights. This is that.

Patty Schemel spent nearly a decade as the drummer in Courtney Love’s grunge band Hole. Having battled drug addiction she now returns to the limelight in P. David Ebersole’s rock documentary Hit So Hard: The Life and Near Death Story of Patty Schemel. We met up with the spirited drummer to chat about the film and her turbulent life.

Hit So Hard, the new documentary about Hole drummer Patty Schemel, got us thinking about rock documentaries that aren’t just about the well-known, well-covered stars. There are more than enough films about those guys, with all the usual clichés of rock 'n' roll excess. But what about the other dudes? The ‘normal-looking’ musicians making interesting, 'alternative' music that rarely ever reaches the ears of the masses. We’ve thrown Mick Jagger out the window like a TV in a hotel room and gone with the bands and artists that really excite us.

It might be the hair, it might be the swagger, it’s definitely Mick’s bee-stung pout. There’s clearly something about the Rolling Stones that makes them ripe for the film camera. Photogenic, cinegenic and probably carcinogenic, the Stones have had countless documentaries and portrayals of their rock ‘n’ roll onstage antics.  Not one but two new documentaries have been released this year about Mick and the gang: Peter Whitehead’s Charlie Is My Darling as well as Brett Morgen’s Crossfire Hurricaine, the official 50-year celebration of the band’s career. Most people know Martin Scorcese’s Shine A Light (2008) about the Stones’ 2006 A Bigger Bang Tour. Lush, epic and displaying Scorcese’s first use of digital cinematography, it’s a suitable ode to the boys’ long career. But have you watched Stoned (2005), the critically panned fictional film about the death (here presented as a murder) of Brian Jones? Deemed terrible by most, I shamelessly confess it’s a guilty pleasure.

Here's an interesting one for you. Did you ever think you'd see Lindsay Lohan in a film penned by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and directed by Paul Schrader (the writer behind Taxi Driver)? No, we didn't either.

This is probably, if we're honest, the film we're most intrigued to see at the moment. But this trailer has proved a bit controversial for some, mainly because people haven't recognised it as a throwback to all the old Roger Corman movies - it's supposed to be kitsch! But no, to them this just looks crappy and badly acted.

But also, let's not forget, this is a teaser trailer and doesn't really represent what the film is actually going to be like.
