Putin Says Blatter Should Win Nobel Peace Prize On Same Day $100m in FIFA Assets Are Frozen

The FIFA corruption story is the gift that keeps on giving.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said some nice things in the press about his new BFF, suspended FIFA president Sepp Blatter. Russia is set to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and the Russians are some of the only supporters Blatter seems to have left.

Here are the relevant Putin quotes, via of the Guardian:

"Whether there are signs of corruption in FIFA, the investigation must show. As for Joseph Blatter, he is a very respected person, he has done a lot for the development of world soccer."

"He has always tried to treat football not as a sport but as an element of cooperation between countries and peoples. He is the one who must be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize."

Putin is obviously an ends-justify-means guy.

Call it coincidence. Call it divine intervention. I don't know what it is, but something amazing happened today. Putin's remarks coincided almost directly with an announcement from the Swiss authorities that they've frozen as much as $100 million of FIFA's money. The money is related to suspected corruption and the U.S. Justice Department's ongoing investigation into FIFA.
