Minecraft Creator Takes Home 2 Game Developers Choice Awards

_Minecraft_, darling of Motherboard and all teh internets, came out on top at GDC/IGF on Wednesday.

Red Dead Redemption, the awards-gobbling monster from Rockstar San Diego, carried home the bulk of the prizes from last night’s Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony. But it was Minecraft, darling of Motherboard and all teh internets, that proved most newsworthy.

The Independent Games Festival Awards, which runs as the night’s preamble to the GDCs, is the yearly coming-out party for a slew of miniature titles that you missed throughout the year. Ever heard of Nighogg? Me neither, but it was up for the Grand Prize last night (and is actually a pretty slick fencing simulator).

Minecraft won most of the IGF awards that Amnesia: The Dark Descent didn’t, but surprised many by winning the Game Developers Choice award for Best Debut Game and the Innovation Award, making that rare crossover from IGF sweetheart to industry-wide success.

“Being nominated in both the IGF and the GDCA shows just how fast Minecraft has grown,” said creator Markus “Notch” Persson as he accepted the award. He then added, “I don’t feel like I deserve this one because of Super Meat Boy being so awesome.”

In the string of video game award shows that annually baffle, enrage, and shame developers and fans alike, the Game Developers Choice Awards typically stands out as the closest to venerable. With professional game designers casting votes and Tim Schafer (of Psychonauts fame) shouldering the hosting duties, the ceremony is a surprisingly entertaining affair. Especially when compared to the Spike Video Game Awards’ yearly ritual of ad-grabs and Olivia Munn boob-shots.
