Liberal MP Caught Using Someone Else’s Culture as a Costume for Halloween

Do white people ever learn? Clearly not.

Photos of Quebec Liberal MP Linda Lapointe have surfaced showing her wearing a culturally insensitive costume for Halloween, almost two weeks after her win in the election.

The photos, which can be found on her public Facebook page, were posted November 1, one day after she dressed up as what appears to be a stereotypical Asian character for Halloween.

With the lead up to Halloween featuring numerous articles explaining to white people that cultural appropriation is a bad thing, it's surprising it took the photos two weeks to surface.

"Fun Halloween Night at the Boisbriand Nature Centre. Super fun with some lovely encounters with monsters big and small! A nice breakfast this morning at the Knights of Columbus chapter 1813 of St Eustache, thanks for your support," the post reads.

In three photos, Lapointe can be seen dressed in a silken robe and rice farming hat posing with children and a person dressed as a witch. She also appears to be carrying a book of some sort, although it's not clear what it is.

The rice farming hat, much like the Aboriginal headdress, has been long used as a trope to mock Asian culture.

Neither the candidate nor a representative from the Liberal Party were immediately available for comment, although the photo has begun to circulate on social media.

"The new Liberal MP for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles sure picked a problematic #Halloween costume…" wrote Twitter user Jason Wager.

Below the Facebook post, a user linked an article from Everyday Feminism that talked about the cultural appropriation of costumes.

In case Lapointe read this, we want to make it clear that it was intended as biting satire.
