Women Hold the Key to Restoring Peace in a Divided Colombia

As Colombian president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Juan Manuel Santos inches closer to reaching a peace agreement with the country's FARC and ELN rebels after 52 years of bloody civil war, guerrilla fighters will prepare to reenter civilian life under a new air of peace.

The fate of the country's stability rests in the hands of Colombia's women—both those at the negotiating table and the thousands of female fighters returning home to their families. FARC soldiers will have to leave their independence and economic equality behind in the jungles and face their country's sexism once they are reintroduced back into mainstream Colombian society.

In honor of International Day of the Girl—a day designated by the UN to focus on improving the lives of young women around the world—we're revisiting Gloria Steinem's exploration into the Colombian civil war for her Emmy-nominated VICELAND show, WOMAN.Steinem sends her team of female journalists to speak with some of the women fighting with the FARC rebels, as well as those working to preserve peace in Colombia's cities.
