At Least 17 Killed in Californian Wildfires
State officials updated the death toll and ordered more evacuations Tuesday night, as fires continued to spread across Wine Country and the surrounding region. At least 180 people have been reported missing, and around 2,000 buildings are believed to have been ruined by the flames in northern California alone. Aided by high winds, fires have now burned across 115,000 acres statewide.—CNN

Trump Allegedly Asked for Massive Increase in Nuclear Stockpile

The president reportedly told military and national security chiefs he wanted to expand the US arsenal of nuclear weapons, according to anonymous sources who attended a July 20 meeting. Officials said Trump expressed a desire for the military to get back to the 32,000 nuclear warheads it possessed in the late 1960s, around eight times as many as it's estimated to have now.—NBC News

Voting Machines Vulnerable to Cyberattacks, Report Says
US election equipment is pretty wide open to any would-be hackers aiming to infiltrate it, according to a study released at the DEFCON cyber security conference. Douglas Lute, former US ambassador to NATO, warned Iran, North Korea, ISIS, and Russia could attempt to manipulate the machines. "Our voting systems are not secure," Lute wrote. "This is not an academic theory; it is not hypothetical; it is real."—CBS News

Obama Weighs In on Harvey Weinstein
Barack Obama said he and his wife, Michelle, were "disgusted" by reports about the producer and Democratic Party donor's alleged sexual harassment of women. "Any man who demeans and degrades women in such fashion needs to be condemned and held accountable," he said. Weinstein was forced to deny new allegations Tuesday after three women accused him of rape in a long report in the New Yorker.—CNN/The New Yorker

Catalan Leader Puts Independence on Pause
The head of Catalonia's regional government Carles Puigdemont stopped short of declaring independence Tuesday, and called for mediation with the Spanish government. Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy called on the Catalan leader to make clear whether he had actually declared independence or not.—VICE News

North Korea Hacks South Korean Military Secrets
Hackers working for Kim Jong-un's regime obtained a cache of South Korean military documents containing wartime strategies drafted by South Korea and the US. A South Korea lawmaker revealed that the data theft took place in September 2016, and included plans to behead Kim Jong-un in the event of a war.—AFP

Malawi Enforces Curfew to Stop 'Vampire' Killings
The Malawi government has imposed limits on movement between 5 PM and 7 AM each night after five people were killed in a panic over vampirism. According to the UN, rural residents have killed people they believe are participating in blood-drinking rituals. The UN has removed staff due to the scare.—BBC News

Four People Killed in Gun Fight in Kashmir
Two Indian commando soldiers and two Islamist fighters were killed when firing broke out in the village of Hajin in the Indian-controlled territory.
