Domestic Documents Volume 1 Share Their Favourite Artists of Right Now

We get meta with a compilation from the compilation itself.

When we first heard that Noise In My Head and Butter Sessions were planning a collaboration of, well, any kind, our interest was pricked. And when Domestic Documents Volume 1 was released, the first of an ongoing series of compilation releases between the two, we were among the many tuning in.

Volume 1 was a testament to the heaving Australian electronic scene, which kind of has to be heard to be believed. A sort of gateway to the often overwhelming breadth of talent and material out there—spanning genres and forms of all kinds—Domestic Documents' first release also proved an exciting view of what's to come.

In the spirit of elevating new and existing music, and giving it a platform, Domestic Documents had some of the artists featured on Volume 1 select a favourite track from an artist they're listening to for THUMP.

CHIARA KICKDRUM — Dr Res

Born and bred in Barcelona, now living in Melbourne. Dr Res is one of the best producers out there. His music is evocative, a full sonic immersion in the depth of electronic and organic rhythms. I love his album Lung Kidnapping on the Disboot label, which was pressed on vinyl. I believe he has a new release coming out soon with some more deep house and techno influences.

Volume 1 was a testament to the heaving Australian electronic scene, which kind of has to be heard to be believed. A sort of gateway to the often overwhelming breadth of talent and material out there—spanning genres and forms of all kinds—Domestic Documents' first release also proved an exciting view of what's to come.

In the spirit of elevating new and existing music, and giving it a platform, Domestic Documents had some of the artists featured on Volume 1 select a favourite track from an artist they're listening to for THUMP.

CHIARA KICKDRUM — Dr Res

Born and bred in Barcelona, now living in Melbourne. Dr Res is one of the best producers out there. His music is evocative, a full sonic immersion in the depth of electronic and organic rhythms. I love his album Lung Kidnapping on the Disboot label, which was pressed on vinyl. I believe he has a new release coming out soon with some more deep house and techno influences.

RORY MCPIKE (TURNER STREET SOUND) — Naram

Naram, Coburgistan via NZ. Flies largely under the radar in Melbourne yet is one of the better producers dedicated to doing his own thing. Master of a hardware heavy, digital riddim based dub. His production debut album March of the Gremlins was released on the cult Jahtari label out of Leipzig. He also co-runs Colonel Mustard, a Jahtari sub label, specialising in original riddims inspired by the golden era of 80s Dancehall on 7" vinyl.

LOW FLUNG — Brainbeau

Brainbeau is Kat Martin and Chelvis Chelsea out of Brisbane. On another level! Weirdo electronic circuit twist dance floor confusion. Their output is inspired, carefree and prolific.

SEAN CAMPION (MULTIPLE MAN) — California Girls

Low Flung, aka Danny Wild, nicked my favourite Brisbane choice so I've gone with my favourite Canberra artist of recent times, which Danny coincidentally released on his Moontown label. California Girls' self proclaimed mission statement is to approximate "Pet Shop Boys if they had gotten their start at an outer suburbs Canberra RSL" Songs of lust, longing and loss from CBR local Gus McGrath. Equal parts lush and anxious synth pop arrangements belaboured by a DIY production value and some truly idiosyncratic live vocals.

CALE SEXTON — Norachi

Spin club member, opened for Giegling, flips a mean pattie, up and comer, top production, great live set, all round good bloke Rhys Adnsl aka Norachi!

LUCY CLICHE — Nicky Crane

Nicky Crane, aka James Vinciguerra, the drummer from Total Control turned wildcard electronic producer is a current fave both for his (reasonably infrequent) live sets and his (mostly tape) releases. Using an all hardware set-up James makes abstracted wonky techno, broken up doof, spiked with noisy dictaphone muffles and acid cameos. He's just got this great way of changing things up every few moments while somehow keeping things going. You've gotta check out his releases on Melbourne based labels Altered States, Future Archaic and Rhythm Works because they're all intriguing and incredible.

MIC MILLS — DJ Heure

Lovely young Adelaide guy who probably doesn't need any repping because I suspect he's about to blow up. Makes oddball house that seems to be influenced by the Japanese greats. Has an EP coming out soon on Distant Hawaii which includes the track below. My favourite is the A2 which is not listenable yet online, but anyone who's seen me play in the last month or two has probably heard it!

SEAN LA'BROOY (ALBRECHT LA'BROOY) — Miris

This is a new project from a Monty Hartnett, a drummer from Aireys Inlet who's been busy in all kinds of bands, most notably Sleep Decade. He teams up with his brother Casey to make really interesting, full bodied heavy textured music anywhere on the ambient to techno spectrum. Really good live shows. You might have to wait for some music, but worth keeping an eye out for!

ALEX ALBRECHT (ALBRECHT LA'BROOY) — UDMO

Melbourne local, UDMO approaches his productions with an incredible sensibility. His forthcoming release on Analogue Attic has both beautiful ambient moments and more dancefloor orientated tracks.
