Viral Style: Jewelry That Prevents Sunburns And Facial Recognition Dating

Modern love: you can now cross-reference OKCupid with the National Sex Offender Registry via smartphone software.

A weekly roundup of what's happening at the intersection of tech and fashion.

IMMERSIVE RETAIL SPACE OF THE WEEK

Gareth Pugh has teamed up with tech company Initiation on a brand new immersive, "multi-sensory" retail experience called Monolith, installed as part Selfridges' ongoing Festival of Imagination. Covering their head with a geometric Pugh-designed helmet, viewers enter a soundproofed booth and step into a monochromatic digital world in 360-degrees using an Oculus Rift virtual reality display that's built into the headgear. Leave your cash flow woes behind as you wander over an abstract cityscapes, or get creeped out by Pugh's surreal figures.

TRIPPY FASHION FILM OF THE WEEK

brightcove.createExperiences();

London Collections: Men recently finished its fourth edition for Autumn/Winter 2014-15 - and aside from everything going down on the catwalk, we also saw the latest collaboration between emerging menswear designer Alex Mattsson and Red Bull Catwalk Studio. No sweat if you missed it; you can check out the new Glimpse the Eternal designs in a trippy two-minute fashion film - one that does everything possible to subvert every boring stereotype fashion films have engendered a rep for. Themed around the concept of inner space (i.e. "the inner space of the subconscious that can only be glimpsed though medication, drugs or dreams"), the surreal vid is all about exploring the subconscious plane through a spectrum of futuristic A/W prints. Loving that Zebra Katz soundtrack too.

TECH-ENABLED JEWELLERY OF THE WEEK

CSR

 (the guys behind Bluetooth Smart) have recently teamed up with Cambridge-based jewellery designers

Cellini

 on a new Bluetooth-enabled pendant necklace, which hooks up with their phone and utilises a

RGB LED

 display to light up and alert the wearer whenever a new event happens on the handset. The project is still in prototype stage at the moment, but CSR have dropped hints that future designs could also come complete with scented capsules that release fragrance at set times. Because, um, perfume?

FACE-SCANNING APP OF THE WEEK

With givens like Google Search and the ongoing fixation with apps like Grindr/Tinder etc, the trend of enabling smartphone tech to influence your dating life is nothing new - but this new app definitely takes things to an insanely creepy next level. Coming soon to iOS and Android, NameTag incorporates facial recognition capabilities to scan the mug of your potential date (or perfect stranger, w/e), before sending a snapshot to a server to find a match amongst millions of other photos. Then, boom, you're hooked up to their name, job and real-time social media accounts in the palm of your hand. If that wasn't intrusive enough, you can even cross-reference their pic with criminal databases like the National Sex Offender Registry! Yay! Okay, so the concept of safety when dating new people is all well and good, but the idea that perfect strangers on the street could instantly gain access to your personal details at the tap of a finger makes us more than a little uneasy.

SUN PROTECTION ACCESSORY OF THE WEEK

It feels like you can't turn on the TV or even venture outside at the moment without the risk of a load of SUN! SEA! RELAXATION! holiday adverts smacking you in the face, so we figured we might as well get in the vacation mood with a look at a new piece of sun-inspired wearable tech. Recently presented at Las Vegas' annual Consumer Electronics Show by smart product specialists Netamo, the June bracelet is able to monitor the wearer's realtime UV sensitivity and sun exposure, before alerting them when they've sat out too long via the medium of a connected smartphone app. It's a pretty chic accessory too, having been designed by a jewellery expert in a choice of gold, platinum or gunmetal alloys - you can also wear it as a brooch. Sun safety has never looked so good.
