Riot police in Istanbul used rubber bullets, pepper spray and tear gas against protesters marching against Turkey’s decision to pull out of an international pledge to fight domestic violence.

Riot police in Istanbul used rubber bullets, pepper spray, and tear gas against protesters on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Clashes broke out with security forces on Thursday night amid calls for Turkey to rejoin the Istanbul Convention, a landmark agreement to stop domestic violence that was signed ten years ago.

Turkey pulled out of the accord in March, which was designed to prevent, prosecute and eliminate domestic violence and included 45 countries.

Protesters, many of whom were women, had been marching along İstiklal Avenue, one of Istanbul’s most famous and busiest streets, chanting slogans. Riot police fired tear gas when a group of protesters tried to breach barriers.

Last year it was reported that 300 women had died by femicide in Turkey.
