The New York Film Festival has been running for over five decades now, annually showcasing some of the year’s most promising films. This year’s headliners include Robert Zemicks’ The Walk starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs biopic, starring Michael Fassbender, and Miles Ahead, directed by and starring Don Cheadle.

For the last 53 years the festival’s poster has functioned as a sort of annual artistic signature, physically encapsulating the essence of the event and its participants; a banner for festivalgoers to rally around; a momento to collect and remember.  Each year the Film Society of Lincoln Center commissions an artist to design the poster. In previous years the festival has attracted the likes of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Cindy Sherman.

This year, technological avant-gardist, legendary musician, and performance artist Laurie Anderson joins this stellar lineup of creatives with her poster design for the 53rd New York Film Festival.

Anderson, best known for her multimedia presentations and experimental songwriting, adds her new poster addition to her collection of groundbreaking works in a range of mediums and art forms. The artist is quoted in the festival’s press release saying, “The NYFF is such an eclectic and ecstatically wild mix of films, and I wanted to try to capture some of the variety of subjects and styles. The original piece this is based on, Follow the Sound, is 18 feet long with lots of plots and characters and fragments. I made this painting two years ago when I was feeling especially inspired by the scale of projected film and the possibilities of abrupt jump cuts. I’m so happy it’s the poster for this year’s festival.”
