British Soccer Fan Surprises Wife, Names Son After His Favorite Club

Baby Bermondsey isn't half bad.

A Millwall supporter considers himself fan enough to carelessly curse his recently born offspring for life. Mike Bloomfield went so far as to name his son Bermondsey Millwall Den—without really telling his wife, Kelly.

For the uninitiated, Millwall is a third-tier EPL side that houses itself in a stadium located in the South London district of Bermondsey, affectionately referred to as The Den. Mike was so amped up about the decision that he contacted Southwark News right after handing over the name at the registry, neglecting to divulge his plan to the woman who carried the child for nine months.

"If David Beckham can name his son Brooklyn, then I can name mine Bermondsey," Mike told Southwark News. "I just love Millwall and this is a good way to get the next generation involved. One of the women at the registry office was a Millwall fan and she loved it when she saw what we are going to name him. I threatened to do it but I don't think my wife believed me. I'm not sure how she's going to react."

So the woman at the registry office knew before your wife? Cool move, Mike. My mother always told me not to propose marriage at sporting events, but this one sure tops that. Apparently, though, Kelly took it in stride.

"He did say he might do it but I didn't expect it," Kelly said. "He was a bit frightened to come home. I'm coming around to it though and I quite like it. It's growing on me. I think he looks a bit like a Bermondsey, and it's definitely unique. I don't think anyone else has got a name like that."

Mike is from Bermondsey, though he now lives in Croyton, where there is an abundance of Crystal Palace fans, according to Kelly.

"Our friends who are Palace fans say that they're just going to call him 'Dave' instead," Kelly said.

A pity the town isn't on board. The phonetic bounce of "Baby Bermondsey" is actually starting to grow on me.
