Putting A New Spin On The Old Masters

Tamir Sher photographs classic paintings revolving at 45rpm.

Have you ever looked at a classic painting—say Jan van Eyck‘s Portrait of a Man in a Turban—and imagined what it might look like spinning around at 45rpm? If the answer to that question is yes then maybe get blind drunk before you next visit a gallery, or take a look at photographer Tamir Sher’s series of images, Masters on 45s, below.

By placing reproduction images of classic paintings onto an old record player and taking pictures at variable speeds using digital photography, Sher utilizes both analogue and digital to interpret iconic images from art history—now would be the optimum time to make a joke about Sher putting a new spin on the old masters, but I already used it up in the title.
