Nintendo Confirms That ‘Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ Will Have DLC

In an unprecedented move for the main series, a $20 “Expansion Pass” gets you new story content later in 2017.

A few weeks ago, I spoke to The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, and asked him if the forthcoming Breath of the Wild, the biggest Zelda game yet, will have any downloadable content up its sleeves. After all, Nintendo's made this massive world for Link to explore, so why not add some new adventures for when the main game's done, The Witcher 3 style?

"We have nothing to announce at this time," was the veteran game-maker's reply. Blunt, understandable, and absolutely expected. After all, there's a wealth of information about the game, and the new Nintendo system itself, the Switch, that its makers simply aren't ready to reveal just yet.

(You can read that interview in full, here.)

Today, though, Aonuma has confirmed that, sure enough, there's much more to Breath of the Wild than what players will see when the game is released on March 3rd.

The available-at-launch "Expansion Pass"—$19.99 in the US, £17.99 in the UK—gets the player two new sets of DLC later in 2017. This is the first time any main Zelda game has had extra content made available after release.

As an instant, on-purchase bonus, extra treasure chests will appear in the game world, containing exclusive outfits for those who are into playing dress-up. After that comes a pack featuring a "Cave of Trials" challenge, a new hard mode for the main game, and more.

Then, towards the end of 2017, comes what I'm looking forward to already: new story content, brand-new quests for Link, and a new dungeon to poke around inside of. The additional content is identical across the Wii U and Switch versions of the game.

"This game is so large and vibrant that we wanted to offer more for players to experience within it," says Aonuma, via the magic of an official Nintendo press release. You can see him in the video below, explaining a little more about the DLC in person.
