Fans of the Goonies have been hassling the people who now live in the movie house since the movie dropped in 1985, biding their time for a sequel. The film's director, Richard Donner, has been promising Goonies 2 for years, but as the years pass it seems less and less like a real thing. Donner hasn't really directed anything for the past decade, and the movie's original screenwriter has moved on to bigger and better things, like Adam Sandler's latest cinematic turd, Pixels.

Besides, it seems like children are mostly interested in watching colorful personifications of their innermost feelings jump around on screen—would they even care about the sequel to some dumb old treasure hunting movie that their parents watched decades ago?

Apparently Donner understands this, because he's hatched a different kind of plan: instead of focusing on a sequel, he's going to turn the story of Chuck, Data, Mikey, and Mouth into some kind of immersive, off-Broadway play for adults, along the lines of Sleep No More or Escape Room.

"There's no seats," Donner told Yahoo! Movies on Thursday, explaining the immersive play concept. "The venue is you go into a warehouse and there's something happening in that warehouse, and that's the play you've come to see… Only you become party of it and you travel through with actors."

Donner claims it'll be another year before the show actually happens, but promises that it'll be "wonderful." That will have to satiate Goonies fans for the time being, since the sequel plan is still vague at best.

"Maybe," he said about Goonies 2. "Everything takes a long time to get it right. If you do things fast and quick and easy, that's a disservice."

Fair enough. We'll have to just enjoy the Goonies version of Sleep No More, instead. Hopefully there will be a naked blood rave in this one, too.
