The City's Least-Likely Dance Hot Spot

A traditional Sundanese dance is reimagined as a street-level dangdut club at this secret Jaipong place.

It doesn't get more "underground" than Bucho Bagya Parera. This all-female dance troupe performs under an overpass in Jatinegara, a neighborhood on the edge of East and Central Jakarta. The women perform Jaipong, a traditional Sundanese dance, on a modest blue-lit stage.

The troupe is made up of members of the same family—a family who began dancing Jaipong back in 1965. Today, you can find them almost every night that they aren't on the road, donned in makeup and crowns dancing to the beat of a kendang drum.
