Welcome to the Salute Your Shorts Issue, featuring Richard: a G-string wearing, Hillary Clinton–supporting, Vietnam vet cum VICE magazine cover star. Canadian photographer Naomi Harris first met Richard in Arizona while road-tripping across the US to coincide with President Trump's first 100 days in office. She wanted to talk to Americans, find out how and why they voted, and take their portraits, a selection of which are featured in this issue.

In this month's features, Sarah Esther Maslin looks at how US deportation policy is stoking gang violence across the nation, investigating a series of recent murders on Long Island at the hands of the El Salvadoran gang MS-13. Aviva Stahl highlights the creation of special units for trans women detained in jails and ICE facilities across the country through the story of Gretta Soto Moreno, a transgender woman who escaped Mexico but barely made it out of America's immigration detention complex. And we have a moving chapter from Sherman Alexie's upcoming memoir, You Don't Have to Say You Love Me.

In the "Taliban Resurgence," VICE on HBO correspondent Ben Anderson travels to Afghanistan to explore how the insurgents control more territory than they have at any point since being overthrown in 2001. And in AAA, Japanese photographer Kenya Sugai shares colorful photographs that bend perspective.

For shorter reads, Jason Leopold, our Freedom of Information Act expert, takes a close look at the FBI file of a woman behind what's widely considered the longest political protest in US history; Thump editor-in-chief Emilie Friedlander profiles journalist and activist Janet Mock; resident infographic wizard Haisam Hussein breaks down the US Supreme Court by the numbers; Beatrice Fihn, the executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, discusses what comes next for nuclear disarmament; and Gianna Toboni, another VICE on HBO correspondent, discusses her story on how Filipino president Rodrigo Duterte is shaping his country's history and threatening free press, which also will soon be featured on an episode of the HBO show called "Controlling the Narrative."
