The Broadly Horoscope Glossary Of Terms

We don't dumb anything down here at Broadly—especially not our horoscopes. Here's a quick and easy list of horoscope terms you might not be familiar with.

Air: One of the four elements of the zodiac, symbolizing information, interaction and the mental. The Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Scorpio.

Aspect: The geometric relationship between planets or points in the sky. The aspect describes how the planetary energies interact with each other.

Cardinal: One of the three modalities of the zodiac. The Cardinal signs are the first signs of the season; as such, they symbolize leadership, and they're action oriented. Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are all Cardinal.

Conjunction: An aspect where two or more planets are located at roughly the same degree of the zodiac.

Direct: The normal, forward motion of a planet through the zodiac.

Earth: One of the four elements of the zodiac, symbolizing stability, practicality and the material. The Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

Fire: One of the four elements of the zodiac, symbolizing energy, enthusiasm and gut instinct. The Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

Fixed: One of the three modalities of the zodiac. Fixed signs fall in the middle of the season, as such, they symbolize determination and endurance. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius are all Fixed.

Mutable: One of the three modalities of the zodiac. Mutable signs are the last sign of a season. They are adaptable and communicative. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces are all Mutable.

Opposition: An aspect where two or more planets are opposing each other, roughly 180 degrees. Confrontation and balance are common themes with this aspect.

Retrograde: When a planet appears to go backwards in the sky. The retrograde alters and intensifies our typical experience of the planet.

Sextile: An aspect where two or more planets are 60 degrees away from each other. This is a harmonious aspect, often indicating cooperation, help or opportunity.

Shadow period: The shadow period occurs before and after a planetary retrograde. The shadow begins once the planet reaches the degree it will retrograde back to, and it ends after the planet passes the degree where which it went retrograde. The pre shadow period reveals what you'll be working on during the retrograde, and the post shadow period is time to tie up loose ends.

Square: An aspect where two or more planets are 90 degrees away from each other. This is a challenging aspect, often indicating tension and action.

Station: A planetary station occurs when a planet turns retrograde or direct.

Trine: An aspect where two or more planets are 90 degrees away from each other. This is a harmonious aspect, indicating ease.

Water: One of the four elements of the zodiac, symbolizing intuition, imagination and emotion. The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
