Lana Del Rey's Newest Collaborator Is, Uh, Andrew Lloyd Webber

One of the most interesting tidbits to come out of last month's L'Officiel interview with Lana Del Rey was the revelation that she has begun writing a musical. When asked, via a fan-submitted question, "Have you ever considered writing and directing your own feature-length or short film?" Lana responded:

I thought about writing a biopic about someone that wasn’t real. Actually, I was asked to write a musical, which I’ve started. It was for Broadway. I may finish in two or three years. Me and Rick [Nowels] have written something, so we’ll see.

It's no surprise that musicals are of interest to Lana: much of her output (both musical and aesthetic) centres on theatricality, artifice, and the building of a narrative. So the fact that she's teamed up with the legendary British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, to record an official cover of the song "You Must Love Me" from his musical Evita for Unmasked: The Platinum Collection, an upcoming compilation celebrating his career (out on 16 March via UMC/Polydor), seems like a good fit.

In typical del Rey style, Lana overhauls the original track (famously performed by Madonna in the film iteration of Evita) to give it all of the understated drama of one of her original songs, and it's actually all the better for it. If you weren't a showtunes sort of person, you might well be now. Hear the cover above.
