As long as the sun is in the sky and water is wet, the Melvins will be the kings of sludge. But after traversing the guitar muck for decades, even these guys have to rest their feet on dry land every once in a while. Gearing up for the upcoming album A Walk with Love and Death, the Melvins have dropped first single "Christ Hammer" via Loudwire.

Buzz Osborne's guitars aren't as fuzzed out as they usually are here, but the main riff hits with blunt force regardless. It's the lush, British Invasion-ish middle-eight that serves as the song's true heart, but even that eventually gives way to an outro of freakout solos. Psychedelic diversions and abrupt noise sections: sounds like a Melvins track, all right. Stream "Christ Hammer" below.

Phil's first guitar pedal was a Big Muff. He's on Twitter.
