Cyriak Creates Kaleidoscopic Visuals To Commemorate Fashion Label's 50th

The outlandish animator teams up with Aussie multi-instrumentalist Ben Ely to create this epic anniversary animation.

Q: What do you get when you cross an up-and-coming British power-animator, Cyriak, with 50 years of fashion design history and a kickin' medley soundtrack? A: Woolmark's 50th Anniversary power video:

From The Woolmark Company:

[We've] teamed up with British animator Cyriak and Australian musician Ben Ely to produce a snapshot of the past 50 years of fashion and the influential role wool has had within the global fashion industry.

Known for his surreal short web animations, Cyriak has taken footage from The Woolmark Company’s archives to showcase a kaleidoscopic mash-up of fashion from the 1960s to today. Presented to the tune of Ben Ely’s composition, the musician from Australian indie rock band Regurgitator has mixed musical genres to complement each decade of visuals.

Says Cyriak, "I wanted it to be a kaleidoscope of fashion imagery that was visually intense but still retained recognizable moments from well-known designs and models from the past.”

By morphing the historic footage over and around Woolmark's iconic "five black bands criss-crossing to form a skein" logo, the Bonobo "Cirrus" director is able to create a swirling vortex that brings the past together with the present, in order to look towards, say, 50 more years.

It's the sort of creative cross-pollination that has Australian multi-instrumentalist Ben Ely switching his style up for the piece's soundtrack: "I usually start with a drum track and build it from there… I discovered as long as the tempo and the key signature were the same then the different parts seemed to fit together fine. It was a bit of a roller coaster ride, but I like it like that.”

The results are nothing short of spectacular. Below, our favorite moments from Cyriak's video for Woolmark's 50th Anniversary:
