In his most recent series, Time Scanning, photographer Donato Maniello demonstrates how he transcends his medium. His surreal photo manipulations, which capture qualities of photography and film, seem to float in the relatively unexplored space between the two art forms. To achieve this effect, Maniello doesn’t use any state of the art technologies or mind blowing techniques. In fact, the process is pretty straightforward.

From what I can deduce, Maniello simply engages in the scanning process of his photos, stretching, contracting, and shaking certain parts of the scene. Instead of just picking up the original, static image, the scanner takes note of the photos’ movement, creating a distorted finished product. Though Maniello’s process may be relatively uncomplicated, the series itself addresses some complex questions about the grey area that still exists between photography and film.
