In 1666 Isaac Newton led some decisive experiments in the fields of optics and fundamental physics that deeply catalyzed our understanding of natural phenomena relating to light, color and motion. To pay homage to Newton's theorems, and to both demonstrate and explain them to those of us who could never pull in anything higher than a C+ in science, two Shanghai-based multi-disciplinary design firms, Wonwei and Super Nature, teamed up to create this interactive audiovisual installation aptly named PRISMA 1666.This highly graphic lightning setup is made of 15 triangular crystal blocks carefully laid down on a clean white surface and controlled by visitors via an iPad app.The designers explain how the project functions:“The projection of colorful graphics is refracted and dispersed by these crystal blocks, creating a fascinating visual experience and ambiance. The installation enables interaction with the projected colors, angles, and shapes through a touch interface, creating an opportunity to experiment with these elements like Isaac Newton did so many years before us”.And, rest assured, it works. Which is good, because, otherwise, it would have meant that Newton had it all wrong and that, basically, a large portion of our scientific knowledge is fundamentally flawed. We first encountered PRISMA 1666 back in July when it received the Best Creative Design Award at the 2011 International Science and Art Exhibition in Shanghai, and were excited to see the video documentation of the project, which is just as beautiful as the photos indicated. We can't wait to see the follow-up installation, which will use an iPad to demonstrate the age-old theoretical principal that "we think, therefore we are. "
