Officials said the gunmen appeared to be targeting members of a rival group when they rounded up between 10 and 12 men from a gourmet restaurant in the Pacific resort city of Puerto Vallarta early on Monday.
The wave of attacks have been widely blamed on the Jalisco New Generation Cartel that in recent years has grown into one of Mexico’s most important criminal groups.
Local news outlets said "El Mencho" was the target of a military operation on Friday that sparked a wave of violence leaving at least seven dead, including three Mexican soldiers.
Not even Mexico's famous tequila industry is immune to extortion and intimidation linked to the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion. On March 19, the group carried out another ambush on state forces, leaving 11 dead.
