Over the last generation or so, first basemen have been beefy swing-and-miss types. The Kansas City Royals' Eric Hosmer isn't like that, but he's as good a first baseman as we've got.
This offseason, the Orioles built a lineup heavy in one-dimensional sluggers. For now, that one dimension—hitting tremendous, towering dingers—is fun to watch.
Kris Bryant is sometimes spectacular, if also a whiff-prone 23-year-old rookie. But when he's right, he's already like any other slugger in the sport. It's good.
