Anders Petersen was born in 1944 in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1966, he studied at Christer Strömholm's School of Photography in Stockholm. A year later, he began photographing the Café Lehmitz in Hamburg, which launched his photography career.

Anders Petersen was born in 1944 in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1966, he studied at Christer Strömholm's School of Photography in Stockholm. A year later, he began photographing the Café Lehmitz in Hamburg, which launched his photography career. In 1984, Petersen’s first book in a trilogy about locked institutions was published. The three books focused on a prison, a nursing home, and a mental hospital. Over the years, he's recieved countless awards for his work such as Photographer of the Year in 2003 from the International Photofestival in ArlesAnders Petersen continues to live and work in Stockholm.
