Come Watch Good Movies for Once with VICE and the Film Foundation

Once upon a time, movies were things you had to leave your house to watch. Once you got to the theater, you had to sit quietly in a dark room for the full two hours. You couldn’t even open a new tab on Google Chrome and order food from Seamless during the boring parts, like when there’s only music or a montage of nature shots or something.

Martin Scorsese remembers that time, and he actually misses it. For the last two decades he and his company, the Film Foundation, have been scrambling to restore 35mm prints of classic movies and share them with future generations. Since most of us at VICE were still shitting our pants two decades ago, we’re probably part of that future generation. It only makes sense that VICE is linking up with the Film Foundation to get schooled on the great movies we skipped over on Netflix because their covers looked boring.

Every month at the Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, we'll be bringing you another restored 35mm print of a classic film from Scorsese’s preservation foundation. First up is Robert Altman’s Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, on May 28. The restored prints will look even better than the 1080p DVD rip you just downloaded.

Later on this summer, VICE and the Film Foundation Screening Series will be bringing you Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and A Woman Under the Influence, which made Richard Dreyfuss puke after he watched it. That's how good the movie is.
