Een lichttunnel in felle neonkleuren, vlammenwerpers, een Boeing 747 nachtclub en het enorme hoofd van Leonardo DaVinci; de dertigste editie van Burning Man is ook nu weer één groot, surrealistisch spektakel. Het festival is slechts een paar dagen aan de gang, maar op Instagram zijn er al 20.000 posts onder de hashtag #burningman2016 te bewonderen. Ter vergelijking: dat is al meer dan een kwart van wat #burningman2015 in een jaar binnenhaalde. Minstens 75.000 mensen, waaronder beroemdheden als Cara Delevingne en Paris Hilton, worden in Black Rock City verwacht. Kortom: Burning Man 2016 is hard op weg om de meest geinstagrammede editie ooit te worden.

De alsmaar sterker wordende mainstream-status is nooit echt de bedoeling geweest van Burning Man, een festival dat middenin de woestijn als een soort maatschappij wordt opgezet om vervolgens weer spoorloos te verdwijnen. Een enorme stroom van beelden op social media van de festivalgangers helpt ook niet daarbij, maar zo kunnen wij stakkers zonder kaartje in ieder geval wel een beetje meegenieten. Here's my friend Rene commanding a massive wart hog on the playa after sunrise today. It's an immense structure that you can climb and it spins around in the wind like mechanical bull. An excavated boeing 747 landed at #burningman yesterday to add to the theme of Da Vinci’s Workshop. The project was 7 years in the making and allows festival goers to step into the aircraft and relax, view art, live performances and virtual reality experiences.
