Nadav Kander en de machtige Yangtze

Foto's uit zijn nieuwe serie Yangtze, the Long River.

Één op de achttien mensen op aarde woont aan de Yangtze, een 6.400 kilometer lange rivier die het oosten en westen van China van elkaar scheidt. In drie jaar tijd is fotograaf Nadav Kander vijf keer naar de Yangtze gegaan om tegen de stroom in te reizen en de mensen die in de buurt van de rivier wonen vast te leggen. De mensen in de foto's worden overschaduwd door het landschap waarin ze zich bevinden—een bewuste keuze van Nadar. Hij gebruikt de rivier als metafoor voor de niet te stoppen industriële en economische revolutie die op dit moment in China gaande is. Volgens Nadav is China een land dat zich afzet tegen haar afkomst door haar verleden te vernietigen. “Er verandert zoveel dat ik op een gegeven moment niet meer doorhad wat er nou werd gebouwd en wat er werd afgebroken.” De foto's zijn schitterend, meditatief en kalmerend. De foto van de badende mensen op een rots is op dit moment mijn bureaubladachtergrond.
