"I would rather get hit by something than let it hit them," she said about the police officers behind her, all of whom were wearing body armor.

In the midst of the chaos and arrests that have marked the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri, one white 19-year-old has gone viral after standing in front of a line of armed police officers last night in an attempt to defend them from attackers.

Shortly after midnight, Lynden Steele, the director of photography at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, tweeted a photo by David Carson of a young woman named Lexi who made a stand, literally, as protesters were tossing things at the police. "I would rather get hit by something than let it hit them," Lexi apparently said.

The officers were all wearing body armor, of course, and she was not.

People on the internet, as you can imagine, are none too pleased about Lexi. Some called her names, others rolled their eyes at #whitepeople, and, since this is the internet, still others used the opportunity to get into infantile fights in the replies to Steele's Tweet.
