A US soldier stationed in Afghanistan embarked upon a late-night murder rampage this weekend, shooting dead 16 Afghan civilians, nine of whom were kids. The Americans weren't exactly the most popular guys in Afghanistan before the shootings, as the world found out last week that they'd taken to burning Qu'ran's. The Afghan president Hamid Karzai has described the spree – which took place as families slept in their homes in a village near the soldier's base in Kandahar – as "impossible to forgive". As cameras filmed the bodies being prepared for burial, some of them appeared to have been burnt. The soldier has not yet been named, but reports say he was a staff sergeant who has three kids and has done three tours of Iraq. He's been arrested and an investigation has been launched. World
BAGHDAD'S EMO COMMUNITY ARE GETTING STONED TO DEATH

The Daily Mail reported this weekend that 90 Iraqi students have been stoned to death for dressing emo in the last few months.The BBC aimed lower, saying that the figure stood at around 50. Apparently 14 youths have been killed in Baghdad in the last three weeks for having "strange hair and tight clothes". Shia militants are said to be carrying out the murderous attacks, and have apparently been circulating kill lists with the names of targets on. The Iraqi Ministry of the Interior has denied the reports, stating that is has no record of any murder that could have been caused by anti-emo sentiments. Nevertheless, Iraq's morality police have released a statement on the government's website declaring its intention to "eliminate" the emo youth fad. Rites of Spring have a lot to answer for. UK

Jon Hamm, the guy who plays Don Draper in Mad Men, has criticised "culture" in an as-yet-unpublished interview with Elle UK. He says: "Whether it's Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated. Being a fucking idiots is a valuable commodity in this culture because you're rewarded significantly." Daniel Craig and Jonah Hill have also slagged off reality TV stars recently, describing the "fucking idiots" as "super disgusting". Culture

In 2004, Banksy put out a book called Cut It Out. In it, he "wrote" an article complaining about advertising. The article (above) has been doing the rounds a lot on Twitter and Tumblr recently. However, this popularity may work against him, because the guy who originally wrote the article for his zine in 1999 saw it and he's upset. Sean Tejaratchi has pointed out the similarities at his blog, mentioning that while "the first paragraph is more or less original… the rest is mine, right down to the same words and phrases". Banksy didn't directly credit Tejaratchi or his zine, Crap Hound, though he did cite Crap Hound as an "influence" on the (now out-of-print) book's back cover. Tejaratchi isn't angry or threatening to sue, he just wants to be credited. Unsurprisingly Banksy hasn't been breaking down the doors of news stations to get his face on TV and do the decent thing and apologise. Sports
