Mali - France Vs. Jihad

We hitched a ride through the desert with a French convoy to hunt rebels and talk IEDs.

Back in February, the only way to reach northern Mali's recently-liberated city of Gao was to hitch a ride with the French convoys that rolled through the desert every few days. Along the way, VICE made friends with the French soldiers fighting this war, and chatted to them about how they see this gruelling campaign as well as the greatest threat they face: The homemade bombs they call IEDs.
