In a time before nachos with cheese dip, wasabi flavoured popcorn or Marvel reboots, Vienna boasted a huge number of arthouse cinemas and independent movie palaces. And although the number of cinemas in Vienna went down from roughly 200 to less than 100 between 1960 and 1980, the ones that remained were charming enough to count for two.

Herwig Jobst is a former director of Vienna's Library for Social Sciences, and according to him, there was never a better time for cinema in Vienna than the 1980s. In 1980, he visited the different cinemas in the city and photographed each one. He published this private archive on his blog, which offers an amazing look into to a period when you could just as casually sit down in the theatre for a sleazy porno as for a Fellini.
