These Ladies Played the Nobel Prize Afterparty

The party theme was 'Sweden', shockingly.

So the Nobel Prize is this – in case you're an idiot – big thing where smart, important people get a prize. It's also partially why Kevin Bacon goes bananas in the movie Hollow Man. So like with every big thing that’s a big deal, a fancy afterparty is mandatory. In this case it's the Nobel NightCap, which, if you haven't guessed already, is the afterparty for the smartest people on the globe.

Annons

Nobel NightCap has been organised by the students at Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) every year since 1978 – the same year that the infamous masscult suicide took place in Jonestown. About one million SEK (€105,000) is spent on this thing every year. And similar to the Jonestown cult this party must be something to die for, right? I hooked up with Y+M, the Stockholm-based DJ-duo who played at this year’s Nobel NightCap to see if that actually was the case.

Noisey: Hi. What's up?
Y+M: Still trying to wash the glitter out of our scalps since the hairstylists at Wednesday’s Nobel NightCap went a bit crazy with our hair-dos. And recuperating from a gig-packed weekend. On Friday we invited a bunch of girl ravers from Malmö to come play with us at Södra Teatern and early Sunday morning we played at this underground party hosted by a bunch of artist boys called Tillsammans Med. It’s been a premium week.

So it seems. You girls played at the Nobel afterparty. How was the vibe?
It was pretty glam. And we were definitely a bit underdressed. The dress code was apparently ball gown. But it could have been worse; we managed to dodge our way out of the wrinkled dirty mine-capes and construction helmets (with built in head-lamps) they had prepared for us [to wear] as part of the theme in the room where we were playing. But really, how are you supposed to DJ wearing a construction helmet?

I have no idea. So tell me a bit about the afterparty – any gossip can you share?
Nope. It was pretty dark in the room where we were playing. Anything could have happened. And they banned us from the VIP-area. We’re pretty sure that’s where all the juicy stuff happened. Even if we did see something we probably couldn’t tell you. You know, without posing a threat to national security that is. Anyway, the party was at SSE and the party theme was Sweden [shockingly]. The cellar was decorated as a mine due to the Swedish steel industry. The outside was a winter wonderland. There was a huge Christmas market with real trees all the way up to the glass ceiling indoors.

Did you go to the prestigious Nobel dinner?
Haha. No. We were probably a bit like some kind of love affair. You know, that you want to call late at night but never bring home to your parents' house for dinner. We heard rumours about it being food in the artist lounge, but we never made it there. They served us vodka ice cream in the DJ booth though. So we're not complaining! But we’re still hoping for next year!

Were you able to identify any of the Nobel Prize winners at the party?
We are a bit embarrassed to admit this, but we probably wouldn’t be able to identify any of the winners of the Nobel Prize. Period. We are kind of bad with faces. Once, Malin’s [a.k.a. M, duh] luggage got lost when she was going on vacation, she managed to borrow a computer at the Athens airport to log onto Facebook in order to get in touch with the people she was meeting up with. Unfortunately Facebook required her to verify her identity by identifying some of her friends by name. She failed. Twice.

LOL. How do you guys go about choosing music? Did it end up in super-technical-smart house?
The "mine" we were booked to play in looked pretty techno, equipped with a Function One sound system that would blow Hagrid away. So we played techno. But sure, we mixed it up with some house to keep the walls from coming down… Our favourite Swedish information techno act Motormännen have made a track called "Gruvkrisen". That pitched up to 128BPM made people go woah.

Hi, my name is Hugo and this is a dorky question: If it was a Nobel Prize for best afterparty attendee at the Nobel afterparty. Who would it be?
We would win hands down. That vodka ice cream was pretty wild.

Thanks, I love ice cream cocktails. Y+M have a blog. Hugo is Noisey's occasional writer covering music in Scandinavia. He's on Twitter.
