Helsinki-based architecture student Antti Auvinen describes his city in the following way:
“I think of Helsinki as a place where strangers never interact with each other except for when they’re drunk – especially in the winter. Everyone wears black and trudges through the slush and just stares forward. Monocle seems to think that Helsinki is a paradise on earth. I suppose that when you surround yourself with the right people and the right amount of beer, it really is!”
Helsinki is the Baltic Sea’s darkest capital during the winter. But what it lacks then it makes up for in the summer. In mid-June, the sun shines for 18 hours and 56 minutes a day, beating its neighbouring capitals with several minutes.
Oh and if you’ve spent too much time binge-drinking away your brain cells: Helsinki is the capital of Finland.
