Kirin J. Callinan Takes "Way To War" On The Road

And he says it'll be a lot like Broadway.

The video for "WIIW" (conceived by Kirin J. Callinan and filmmaking whizkid Kris Moyes) launched last week causing brains all over the internet to shit themselves in awe. Ours included, so don't be embarrassed. Kirin's tour, which kicks off in the second half of June will set off prefrontal rumblings of equal or greater magnitude up and down Australia's east coast. He recently found time between his job at a bowling club and making music to answer some questions.

VICE: The new single has an epic, armageddon-ish bleakness to it. Are you optimistic about humanity and our immediate future?
Kirin J. Callinan: Humanity, AKA us, and our succeeding generations, bound by blood? Yes, incredibly so. This song isn't about the imminent apocalypse or anihilation, true death or pure evil or the absolute end or anything so bleak… Just a bit of modern warfare. Only slightly more theatrical.

Is "WIIW" a pretty good indication of what the album sounds like?
No.

Fair enough. We love the video, it’s right out there. What was it like working with Kris?
Difficult and very rewarding. Of course, this was our first video together so I can only reflect upon this one, lone experience. It was not without its hurdles, as is obviously the case with any challenging endeavour. I get on well with Kris, and the conception and concept development was incredibly exciting and indulgent. The shooting was fast paced however and a heap of fun - I always love being immortalised - though it was also not without its trauma. It is my partner, her son and I in the clip, so there were certain questions raised in the process - objectification of the female body, our duty of care, his and her privacy etc. The things we do for love.

And how about Terrible Records? That’s a pretty good score landing a dual release with them and Siberia.
Two great labels. Tip-top blokes too.

Just finally, we hear your live show is going to be something unique, what can we expect?
Well, I'd be lying if I said I've never had a lonely moment, performing solo and all the rest, so this time it's a full band on the road, featuring some of the best there is. There will be lots of machines. There will be lots of sweat. I imagine some antagonistic moments, but also beauty and hopefully tears. I'm excited by the dynamic potential. There will be great opening acts - Kangaroo Skull, Forces, Machine - all Melbourne; Nite Fields of Brisbane; DCM of Sydney. There will be strobes.

Sounds like a bit of a spectacle.
I think it will be a lot like Broadway - camp, overblown and with costumes - only louder and nothing at all like Broadway.
