Dwelling in beer soaked basements with walls decorated in German, Nazi and Canadian Red Ensign flags, groups of Neo-Nazi Skinheads band together to form underground sects across Canada. I spent three years amongst these groups in Toronto, Hamilton and Calgary. It was difficult to call such hateful people my friends, but after being with them for over three years, in which deep dark secrets were shared and new ones were created, it was impossible not to develop a bond of trust. Over this period it was painful for me to watch them cover their skin with Nazi symbols and build their criminal records like résumés, their life choices persistently alienating themselves from a general society they’ve pegged as the enemy. Occasionally their relationships survived beyond their many violent intoxicated nights. Children were born, couples wed, and families were created—the next generation crafted. At the same time, two of the men in these photographs now sit behind bars in a Calgary jail, each facing a charge of second-degree murder. Penalized by society, they feel they are on a path of righteousness and will only answer to God.
