There were no major announcements at Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference last night, no last-minute reveals of Bloodborne 2 or a release date for Kingdom Hearts III. That said, there was some cool stuff, especially if you, like any reasonable person, are a fan of Konami's Zone of the Enders series. (No, it's not a sequel, but it's still pretty cool.)Left Alive is a "survival action shooter" from Armored Core director Toshifumi Nabeshima, with character designs from Metal Gear Solid's Yoji Shinkawa. Importantly, it has mechs, and is coming to both PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in 2018. Ghost in the Shell: Arise and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 designer Takayuki Yanase is working on the game's mech designs.Elsewhere, here are the big takeaways:And here are the trailers to go along with those announcements:Follow Patrick on Twitter. - Monster Hunter World will be released on January 26 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with the PC version "at a later date."
- There was a new trailer for the great-looking Shadow of the Colossus remake.
- A high-res Final Fantasy IX is coming to PS4. In fact, you can download it right now.
- Konami is remastering Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner for PS4, with VR support. It's also coming to PC. (Hell yes, two mech games at one show? Anyway, I hope this remaster is good, I'm being critically detached, etc. etc., but hell yes! -Austin)
- Final Fantasy XV's Noctis has joined Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.
- As rumored, Dragon's Crown has been remastered for PS4 as Dragon's Crown Pro, and is coming to Japan on January 25. No word on the US.
- Two different Earth Defense Force games were highlighted, with Earth Defense Force 5 getting a release date—December 7 in Japan—and Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain, a new take on the series that seems to ditch the B-movie tone the series is known for. (These games both seem to have giant robots. Interesting. -Austin)
- Another VR toy from Sony is Japan Studio VR Music Festival, where you can interact with music from games like Gravity Rush. It'll be out September 20 in Japan.
- Perhaps the most important announcement was Neko Astume getting a VR game.
- 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, a mech collaboration between Atlus and Vanillaware, is coming to PS4 and Vita. (Bolded that to add needed emphasis, Patrick. Don't even worry about it. -Austin)
- Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2, the follow-up to the popular-in-Japan multiplayer Gundam game for the PS3. Here's hoping it gets an English release. By the way? Have you watched Gundam? You should watch some Gundam.
- Yet another mech game, A Certain Magical Virtual On, crosses the giant robot fighting game over with a popular anime, manga, and light novel series. As a reminder, Virtual On, as a series, is under-appreciated and misunderstood; a clever twist to the fighting game with a unique sense of speed and tactical decision making. Also the one for Dreamcast was called Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram and that's a dope name.
- (Patrick, I added the last two entries to this list, since they somehow were not here before. Also: Yes, reader, I am very happy that this many mech games were at the show. -Austin)
