CALE ZIMA IS GETTING HIS BALLS KICKED IN NEVERLAND BUT HE’S TAKING IT LIKE A (LITTLE) MAN

If you care about snowboarding, you might like to know that right now Cale Zima is touring around Europe in a really manly black tour bus with Nicolas Müller, Romain de Marchi, and a bunch of other people related to

Absinthe

, the only film company that makes good snowboarding movies. He's spending most of the time drinking and recovering from drinking and talking to girls and recovering from talking to girls (the language barrier can be quite a pain in the ass). At some point he found a couple of minutes between feeling all European to talk to us about the beauty in slams and Baby Spice.

Vice: Your part in the new Absinthe movie was definitely one of my favorites because it was so fucking funny. I mean, obviously you know what you're doing on a rail, but I can't shake the feeling you have a thing for really entertaining slams… Cale Zima: Ha, ha, thanks I'm glad you liked my part! Well, slams are definitely not my favorite part about riding but they are for sure necessary. I have no idea how many slams I have taken in my life but I can say at least one every time I go riding, probably more! A lot of the slams that I take are just painful for a minute, like when you bump your head on a cabinet or something and it hurts way bad for like two minutes and then you feel better.

So pain is a good thing because it feels so nice when it stops hurting?

Well, the slams are more annoying than anything. You definitely wake up in the morning and are like, "What the fuck!" I think slams are an important part of snowboarding because if you are not falling then you are not trying new shit, which means you're not pushing yourself. Falls are like the price you have to pay to land cool tricks, it makes landing the trick feel even better!

Do you think there's a certain beauty and sexiness within slams? I don't know how sexy slams are, ha ha. Usually when I see someone fall I feel bad for them or I get a little bit of second hand embarrassment. But hopefully there are some girls out there who think slams are sexy and then I could have a chance with the ladies. Maybe if they're like a nurse or something… I have been fortunate enough to not have that serious of injuries. The worst injuries I have had are I have broken both my wrists and separated my shoulder.

Good for you. But let's talk about something else than torn/cracked/bruised body parts. Absinthe is turning ten this year and Neverland is the second piece you've done with them. What is it like to shoot with these guys? You are always surrounded by the coolest, nicest and most laid-back people. Do you tuck each other in at night and stuff or is it more like siblings who occasionally beat the crap out of each other? We never get in fights 'cause everyone in the crew is awesome, so you could say we love each other, but not like physically.

Right. Annie Boulanger told me how she killed a tree with her snow mobile in an accident last year. What's the funniest thing that happened this time? The funniest thing I saw happen was this photographer named Bob Plumb. He was way drunk in this bar and decided he was going to go home with this huge chick, and he kept calling her Baby Spice. But he dropped balls and didn't go with her. What's Europe like for you, being actually old enough to do stuff? I love it! It is so cool to see all these new places and the best part is we always drive to new places at night so I am always waking up in a new beautiful place. All the people I have met so far are awesome they are all so hyped and so nice.

Are you sure you've been to Germany already? I can't believe you haven't met anyone mean yet… The only thing is you get a lot of mean mugs when you skate through the streets. It's cool to be of age here to drink and go to clubs and shit but some of the mornings can be rough. And every girl here is a supermodel.

Again… not sure if we're talking about the same place here. So what's one thing that's a bummer around here? The language barrier, it makes it super hard to spit game to all the amazing chicks here. It is also pretty expensive, especially when you're in Switzerland.

Yeah, it's pretty expensive to get drunk in Zurich. Anyways, our current issue is called A Film Issue, so do you mind if we talk about movies for a bit? Any favorites? Watching movies just happens to be one of my favorite things in the whole world. If you're talking about snowboarding vids then I would have to say my favorite is Love/Hate. I fucking love this movie. I like it because it has all my favorite riders together in one flick and its put together in a more artsy way. I was actually thinking like movie movies, you know? Then I'd have to say Gone Baby Gone. Oh yeah, and Asian Babes 3 is a good one too! OK, nevermind. Photos by Shane Charlebois
