Instead of us clammering for Jacinda's attention on the red carpet, or chaffing our hands on applause for Lorde's six acceptance speeches, we decided the best way to get the real story at the VNZMAs was to slide a disposable camera in the hands of one of the artists. New Zealand music is in a great place with SWIDT, Aldous Harding, Teeks, Nadia Reid, and of course Alien Weaponry. We wanted to see the night through the eyes of the first-time nominees Alien Weaponry, who were up for Māori Artist of the Year for their unique te reo thrash metal—why they were not up for best rock act as well is beyond us.
