Designers Dhruv Saxena, Ciarán Duffy, and John Ferreira at the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design have come up with a new kind of drum machine that runs on, of all things, ping pong balls. The "Haptic Hang Drum" is an experimental instrument that uses servo motors, motorised sliders, and Hall effect sliders to create its sound, rooted in samples from music software Ableton Live.In the video description the artists write, “the motorized sliders simulate the pressure mounting in the spring. When the pressure breaks, the ping pong ball is fired and it strikes one of eight hall effect sensors in the hang drum.” Watch the "Haptic Hang Drum" in action in the video below.Visit the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design's website for more projects.Related:Introducing the Yaybahar an Acoustic Instrument that Makes Space Age SoundsThe Phonotube Turns Light Into An InstrumentTouch-Sensitive Instrument Turns Music Loops Into Expressive Light
