Two 2D hands drawing each other into existence! What high-concept whimsy! Wrong.Now we know, of course, that Escher was predicting the singularity, that moment in the then-far-off future when machines would become capable of reproducing themselves thanks to fast-accelerating artificial intelligence. Those aren’t just hands—they are robot hands.Also, everybody knows that Rene Magritte foresaw the rise of cyborg footwear.
