Perth's Revelation Film Festival is back next month for its 19th year, showcasing the offbeat indie features and documentaries that you won't find in mainstream cinemas.

In preparation for the festival, selectors view over 500 submissions from local and international directors with an experimental eye. Successful films are screened at movie theatres, galleries, bars, and cafes across the city over 10 glorious days of independent cinephilia.

There's so much on offer at this year's Rev that it's almost stressful. To help you make the most of the festival, we've narrowed the schedule down to a list of must-sees.

Jim Henson: Behind the Seams

This year Revelation Film Festival is staging a mini Jim Henson retrospective, celebrating not only the visionary muppeteer's well known family films but also his past as a countercultural filmmaker. This documentary provides a behind-the-scenes look at Henson's lesser-known creative life. Take it in before you hit up screenings of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal.

Dude Bro Party Massacre III

Screening as part of the festival's late night program, this 1980s slasher film send-up turns the conventions of everyone's favourite VHS genre on their head. The dangerous thrills of drug-driven sex get put under the microscope in this VICE documentary about the emerging chemsex community, which has grown in popularity through gay sex apps like Grindr. You're not going to watch anything else like it this year.

Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie

Cult sex symbol and weirdo documentarian Louis Theroux bravely takes on the Church of Scientology in this sometimes-disturbing analysis that sees him talking to ex-members of the notoriously private celebrity religion. You'll come out of it as fascinated and confused about Operating Thetan Levels as ever.
