Boston University Goalie Gives Championship Away on Incredible Blunder

Boston University Goalie gives up brutal own goal to give away NCAA Championship.

The Providence Friars won the NCAA Hockey Championship last night, beating Boston University 4-3 thanks to two goals in the final ten minutes of the game. BU held a 3-2 lead but with just under nine minutes left to play, they struggled to get the puck out of their zone. Multiple, unsuccessful clearing attempts resulted in a final effort that got the puck just to center ice, where Kyle McKenzie simply lofted it back into the zone and BU goalie Matt O'Connor caught it with his glove. Then, disaster.

Somehow, the puck fell out his glove, rolled between his legs, and trickled into the net for the tying goal. It's like a scene from Looney Tunes when a gun explodes in Daffy Duck's face and he's just blinking through soot, and you have to feel just awful for O'Connor. He looked like he was trying to drop it and play it to a teammate but the puck slipped out before he was ready. Just brutal. Then Providence just started throwing all kinds of shit at O'Connor, because why not? Dude was shook.

About two minutes later Providence scored again, this time Brandon Tanev roofed the game-winner over O'Connor's shoulder after a face-off win in the zone and sealed the school's first ever hockey title.
