    Hillary Clinton will unveil her plans to curb gun violence today. The proposals, which follow her pledge to lead a "movement" against the National Rifle Association, are thought to include the use of executive action to close loopholes regarding gun purchasing. —The New York Times
  • South Carolina's Historic Floods
    President Obama has declared a state of emergency in South Carolina, as the state tries to cope with "catastrophic" flooding. Governor Nikki Haley said the state had not seen rainfall like this "in 1,000 years". —CNN
  • Supreme Court: Return to the Right?
    A new US Supreme Court term begins today, and legal experts are already predicting "big victories" for the court's conservatives. After successful same-sex marriage and Obamacare rulings, liberals have been warned about a "return to the norm". —NBC News
  • American Apparel Has Money Troubles
    American Apparel has filed for bankruptcy protection. The retailer says creditors have committed $70 million to continue funding operations (the company has not yet revealed whether any stores will have to close). —The Wall Street Journal

  • Turkey Intercepts Russia Warplane
    Two Turkish F-16 fighter jets have intercepted a Russian warplane that violated Turkey's air space. The Russian plane exited the country's air space soon after the incident, but Turkey has "strongly protested" the violation. —The Guardian
  • Doctors Pull Out of Afghan City
    Doctors Without Borders is to leave the war-torn city of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan after the disastrous airstrike on a hospital which killed 12 of its staffers. The aid agency says it is "disgusted" by Afghan government statements justifying the strike. —CBC News
  • Palmyra Temple Pulverized
    Islamic State militants in Syria have "pulverized" the Arch of Triumph, a monument in the 2,000-year-old Roman city of Palmyra. The Islamic State is destroying any ancient monuments it believes represent pagan idolatry. —BBC
  • Progress On Global Poverty
    By the end of this year, less than 10 percent of the world's population will be living in extreme poverty, the World Bank has forecast. The proportion of people below the poverty line (living under $1.90 a day) is set to fall from 12.8% to 9.6%. —Al Jazeera
